I’ve written a couple of blog posts about poet, musician, songwriter, and performance artist, Ivor Cutler, containing videos of his poems and music. You can find them here and here. He tapped into a vein of dark, eccentric, mordant humour that had me thinking again about the world and its transactions. Part of that might have been my early exposure to his work – stoned and listening to the John Peel Show in the small hours of the morning.
But it still delights me, even years later in the cold light of day, and it’s even more necessary now that we’re becoming squeezed into simplistic systems of thought for the benefit of corporations and governments. Cutler managed to save his soul – if an atheist is allowed to say that – through following his eccentric genius. Not for everybody, but we need people like him.
Here are photos Cutler took of his flat, and a BBC4 documentary about him. A treat for me because I’ve never seen it, and don’t have a clear idea of his biography. Hope you enjoy it as much as I will.
